MTV TRL RADIO

We took the energy of MTV’s Times Square, reimagined it for Africa, added in radio, and turned TRL into something new — one connected world where radio, television, African music, artists and audiences could all meet in the same cultural moment.”
Jandre Louw, Creator, Creative Director, Head of Production & Executive Producer, MTV TRL Radio

MTV TRL Radio was conceived during one of the most formative periods in the growth of MTV Networks Africa: a moment when the challenge was not simply to bring MTV into Africa, but to reinterpret what MTV could become when it was shaped around African audiences, African artists and the realities of the media landscape across the continent.

Created by Jandre Louw, MTV TRL Radio began as an original African spin-off from MTV’s globally iconic Total Request Live, or TRL, the flagship show broadcast from MTV’s studios overlooking Times Square in New York City. The original TRL had become one of the defining television properties of an entire generation, bringing artists, fans, music, celebrity culture and live audience participation together inside one constantly moving cultural conversation.

The opportunity in Africa was not to replicate that show.
It was to rethink it.

Jandre developed the concept as a new radio-plus-television format, taking the essential DNA of TRL and adapting it into a broader, more flexible entertainment platform that could live across different broadcast environments. In addition to creating the original concept, he served as Creative Director, Head of Production and Executive Producer, overseeing the format’s creative development, production structure and overall execution.

He also created and designed the MTV TRL Radio logo and complete brand identity, developing the visual language through which the property would be recognised across broadcast, television, marketing, sponsorship, promotions and audience-facing communications.

MTV TRL Radio was conceived not simply as a radio show, but as a new cross-platform MTV experience: radio and television operating as one connected cultural space.

At the heart of the idea was a simple but powerful principle: MTV did not need to be limited to a television screen.

Across Africa at the time, radio remained one of the most immediate, accessible and culturally influential ways of reaching young audiences. Television penetration was growing, but it was still uneven from market to market, and broadband, streaming and social media had not yet created the always-on ecosystem that would later become normal.

Radio offered something different. It was intimate. Immediate. Mobile. Local. It lived in homes, taxis, campuses, cars, workplaces and public spaces. It was already woven into the rhythm of everyday life.

MTV TRL Radio was therefore designed to use radio not as a secondary platform, but as an extension of the MTV experience itself.

The format combined music countdowns, artist interviews, entertainment news, competitions, presenter-led storytelling, audience interaction and exclusive MTV content. It created a bridge between the immediacy of radio and the visual world of MTV television, allowing music, artists, presenters and stories to move between both platforms.

The result was an African evolution of TRL rather than an imitation of it.

The original TRL had transformed Times Square into a living stage for youth culture. MTV TRL Radio took that energy and reimagined what it could become in Africa.

The first-ever original host of MTV TRL Radio was Nicole Fox, who became the programme’s initial on-air voice and public face.

Nicole brought the format to life at launch, helping establish its energy, personality and relationship with listeners. Her presence gave the new concept an immediate identity on radio, introducing audiences to its mix of music, entertainment, audience participation and MTV content.

She represented the first chapter of the format before the property later evolved through the involvement of Fikile 'Fix' Moeti and Sizwe Dhlomo, two of the defining VJ personalities of MTV Africa’s early years.

Fix and Sizwe helped extend the format further into the wider MTV television and radio environment, strengthening the relationship between the different platforms and creating continuity between the voices audiences heard on radio and the personalities they were increasingly seeing on MTV base.

Nicole Fox became the first voice of MTV TRL Radio, before Fix Moeti and Sizwe Dhlomo helped carry the format into its next chapter.

In South Africa, MTV TRL Radio was developed through the relationship between MTV base and 5FM, one of the country’s most influential youth radio stations, with KFC as commercial partner.

The show occupied a substantial Saturday broadcast slot and brought the pace, attitude and cultural language of MTV into a radio environment that already had a powerful relationship with young South African audiences.

The conventional radio countdown was expanded into something far more immersive. African and international music sat alongside interviews, entertainment stories, listener participation, competitions, exclusive MTV material and presenter-led features. The show was structured not simply as a chart show, but as an entertainment property with its own personality, identity and world.

At the same time, the radio show was directly connected to the wider TRL television environment on MTV base.

The television component featured audience-selected music videos, interviews, artist appearances and presenter-led segments, while radio allowed those relationships to become broader and more continuous.

Rather than treating radio and television as separate products, MTV TRL Radio was designed to make both feel like parts of one experience.

The breakthrough was connecting radio and television as one experience, allowing music, personalities, audiences and the MTV brand to move seamlessly between both.

That same thinking informed the visual identity. The logo and complete brand identity created and designed by Jandre Louw were conceived as part of the format itself rather than as decoration added afterwards.

The identity needed to work equally well across radio promotions, television screens, marketing materials, sponsorship environments, branded content and campaign applications.

It had to carry the recognisable DNA of MTV and TRL while giving the new African property its own distinct visual presence. The branding became the visual thread connecting all the different parts of the format. It ensured that whether the audience encountered MTV TRL Radio through radio, television, a promotional campaign or a commercial partner, they were entering the same creative world.

The logo and brand identity were designed as part of the format itself, one visual language capable of connecting radio, television, marketing and audience experience.

The concept was not restricted to South Africa.

MTV TRL Radio was subsequently extended into East Africa, including a partnership between MTV base and Capital FM Kenya in Nairobi.

The East African edition carried the same underlying philosophy while adapting naturally to its own audience and broadcast environment. African and international music, presenter features, entertainment news, competitions, artist interviews and MTV content were brought together in a format that could be localised without losing the core structure of the original concept.

Additional short-form TRL entertainment updates also allowed the property to live outside the primary radio show, extending the MTV presence throughout the station’s broader schedule. This ability to expand and adapt was central to the concept from the beginning.

MTV TRL Radio was not designed as a rigid show that could only exist in one studio or one market. It was designed as a flexible platform, one that could retain its identity while being shaped around different audiences, presenters, broadcasters and commercial partners across Africa.

In Africa, the platform could never be more important than the audience. The idea was to take MTV to young people wherever they already were.

That philosophy reflected something much larger about MTV Networks Africa during those early years.

The ambition was not simply to distribute international MTV content into African markets. The deeper objective was to create an African MTV ecosystem in which the continent’s artists, audiences, presenters, stories and cultural identities were part of the centre of the experience.

MTV TRL Radio became one expression of that broader philosophy.

By bringing African and international artists into the same programming environment, the format helped reinforce a different cultural hierarchy. African artists were not treated as a separate category operating alongside a supposedly more important international mainstream. They existed within the same music conversation.

That distinction mattered.

At the time, many African artists were still fighting for consistent access to major broadcast platforms, and there remained a strong tendency within global entertainment media to treat African music as regional rather than international.

MTV Networks Africa was working against that idea.

Through formats such as MTV TRL Radio, African artists could be positioned naturally alongside the world’s biggest names, not as an exception, but as part of the same contemporary youth culture.

African artists were not positioned on the margins of the global music conversation, they belonged inside the same cultural space as the biggest international names.

This was one of the most important cultural functions of the format. MTV TRL Radio gave audiences access not only to music, but to context, personalities, stories and participation. It encouraged young listeners to engage with artists, follow presenters, vote, respond and become part of the entertainment experience rather than simply consume it.

That participatory quality was inherited from the original TRL, but in Africa it took on a different significance. It helped build a sense that audiences themselves were shaping culture.

Long before streaming services began recommending songs through algorithms, before social media transformed artists into always-accessible personalities, and before creator platforms made audience interaction the foundation of the entertainment economy, MTV TRL Radio was already operating around many of those same instincts. It was interactive. It was personality-led. It moved across platforms.

And it understood that music was no longer simply something people listened to or watched. It was something they wanted to participate in.

MTV TRL Radio therefore became much more than a radio countdown.

It represented an early 360-degree entertainment ecosystem, bringing together radio, television, artists, music videos, presenters, audience voting, entertainment news, competitions, promotional campaigns, commercial partnerships and branded storytelling.

Under Jandre Louw’s creative and production leadership — and supported by the concept, logo, brand identity and production system he created — the property demonstrated how one of MTV’s most recognisable global franchises could be completely reinterpreted for a different continent without losing the energy and cultural authority that had made TRL iconic in the first place.

Long before social media made cross-platform culture the norm, MTV TRL Radio was already connecting audiences, artists, radio, television and participation inside one ecosystem.

Seen from today’s perspective, MTV TRL Radio also feels remarkably contemporary. The modern creator economy is built around the idea that audiences move constantly between platforms, that personalities matter as much as shows, that brands need to exist across multiple environments, and that people expect to participate in culture rather than simply watch it. MTV TRL Radio was exploring many of those ideas years earlier.

It connected different media platforms into one audience experience. It made presenters central to the relationship between the brand and the audience. It placed local and international talent in the same cultural space. It combined entertainment, audience interaction, commercial partnerships and visual identity into one coherent platform. Most importantly, it was designed around the reality of the audience rather than the limitations of the medium.

From its original conception by Jandre Louw, who created the format and served as Creative Director, Head of Production and Executive Producer, to the logo and brand identity he designed, through the launch with Nicole Fox as the first-ever host, and its later evolution with Fix Moeti and Sizwe Dhlomo, MTV TRL Radio became an important part of MTV Networks Africa’s early story.

It represented the larger spirit of that period: taking the cultural power of MTV, refusing simply to reproduce what had worked elsewhere, and instead rebuilding it around Africa. Not MTV arriving in Africa and asking the continent to adapt to it. But MTV adapting, evolving and creating something new because Africa was now part of what MTV itself was becoming.
